As a chiropractor and functional wellness provider, I’ve had more and more parents ask me the same question this time of year:
“Is there anything we can do to help our child focus better in school without drugs?”
If you’re a parent of a child with ADHD, ADD, or sensory challenges, you already know how overwhelming the back-to-school season can be. Between adjusting to routines, managing big emotions, and juggling schoolwork, it’s a lot, for them and for you.
But what if I told you that what’s happening in their gut may be affecting what’s happening in their brain?
It might sound strange, but the science backs it up; and as a parent and provider, I think it’s one of the most important conversations we can have and it's becoming more mainstream everyday.
The gut and brain are connected by a communication highway known as the gut-brain axis. That means what’s going on in the digestive system can actually influence mood, attention, behavior, and brain function.
In fact, the gut produces around 90% of the body’s serotonin (a key neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation), and it houses trillions of microbes that play a role in inflammation, nutrient absorption, and immune health.
So when a child’s gut is out of balance due to poor diet, food sensitivities, antibiotics, or stress it can show up as:
Difficulty focusing
Emotional outbursts
Brain fog
Trouble sleeping
Sensory overwhelm
Chronic tummy aches or constipation
Sound familiar?
To be clear: ADHD and neurodiversity are not caused by bad parenting or poor discipline. These are neurological conditions with real challenges, but we’re learning there are natural tools that can support the brain by first supporting the gut.
We know families who feel like they’ve tried everything....meds, diets, supplements - and they’re still stuck. But simple at-home gut health tests and customized a plan, something shifts
Kids slept better.
Their digestion improved.
Meltdowns became less intense.
Teachers noticed better focus in the classroom.
These aren’t miracle cures they’re signs that the body is working the way it’s meant to when we support it from the inside out.
We combine chiropractic care (which supports the nervous system) with functional wellness tools like:
✅ Food sensitivity testing to identify hidden triggers
✅ Personalized gut support protocols (think: simple supplements + kid-friendly nutrition)
✅ Chiropractic adjustments to reduce tension and help regulate the nervous system.
And we do it in a way that’s family-friendly, judgment-free, and focused on real-life results: not perfection.
If this blog sparked something in you—maybe a gut feeling (pun intended)—I’d love to invite you to our upcoming ADHD & Gut Health event on Sunday, September 8th.
We’ll be sharing:
The latest research on gut-brain health
What testing looks like (and what it can reveal)
Simple, practical steps to support your child’s focus naturally
Real patient stories and Q&A
It’s free to attend, open to the public, and could be the turning point your family has been hoping for.
You don’t have to figure it out alone.
Schedule a discovery visit at Family Chiropractic of the 4 States or RSVP for our event on September 8th to learn more. We’ll help you understand if your child’s gut might be holding the key to better focus, better moods, and a better school year.
